Membership Campaign
Contrary to popular thought, the PTSA does not REQUIRE a member to volunteer as part of their membership!
1. What is PTSA?
PTSA stands for Parent Teacher Student Association. PTSA is an association designed for parents, educators, students, and other citizens to be active in their schools and communities.
2. What does it mean "to join PTSA"?
We ask potential members for a $10.00 membership fee. From this amount, $3.75 goes to the State and National PTA for legislative support of the educational programs throughout the state and the country. Discovery High School only keeps about $6.25. The PTSA relies heavily on donations, sponsorships, and fundraising to help support the students and school.
3. What is the money used for?
Discovery High PTSA promotes education and extra-curricular activities at our school. These programs are funded solely by the membership drive and school-wide fundraisers. Our parents work very hard to raise money for educational supplies & scholarships, athletic equipment, student activities, and staff appreciation at Discovery High School.
4. Do PTSA members get paid when working at the schools?
No. PTSA members volunteer their time, and we welcome anyone who is willing to assist.
5. Can anyone become a member?
Yes. ALL are welcome. We invite parents, guardians, students, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, friends, neighbors, educators, businesses, and community members. The more members, the larger our support group.
6. Do we have to volunteer in the school to be a member?
No. You are NOT REQUIRED to volunteer any time for our events and/or fundraising. We appreciate your assistance, but you are absolutely NOT required to do so.
7. How do I get involved?
We are always looking for help. Different programs and activities require long-term and short-term chairmen and committee members/helpers. Therefore, volunteers are needed throughout the school year for all events. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact our PTSA volunteer coordinator by signing up on our Volunteer Page www.discoveryhighptsa.weebly.com/volunteer.html
8. Why should I join the PTSA?
Parents: To benefit your child. In doing so, you also help your school. By getting involved at your child’s school you’ll be part of the solution, helping make positive changes. Local PTSAs play an important role by supporting building improvements through advocacy and play an important role in fundraising for curriculum based programs and social events.
Teachers/Educators: PTSA addresses issues that are important to parents and public school administrators. We fight for full funding, quality teachers, and capabilities for schools to thrive.
Students: PTSA student leaders earn community service hours for their contributions to the organization.
Businesses: PTSA strives to create meaningful partnerships and alliances to further family engagement, improve student success, and share relevant resources.
All levels: PTSAs focus on what students need to be successful in their learning, including nutrition, health, school safety, physical fitness and general well-being. PTSA works with schools to ensure that ALL children succeed.

Meeting Info
Must a Member Attend PTSA Meetings?
No, but everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. YOUR OPINION COUNTS!
What Is the Difference Between a PTSA General Meeting and a PTSA Board Meeting?
A PTSA General Meeting is called for the purpose of conducting business which requires a vote of the general membership such as approval of the budget, fundraisers and PTSA calendar, forming a nominating committee, and holding elections. Only PTSA members may vote at these meetings. We hold three (3) general meetings per school year. (Sept, Dec, & Mar)
A PTSA Board Meeting involves the elected officers of the PTSA and the chairmen. These meetings are held monthly to discuss upcoming events and the ongoing business of the organization.
If a member wishes to attend one of these meetings, they are welcome to do so, but are asked to please inform the PTSA Board.
